Kailua Cabins

Unlike scrap Log Cabin quilts that feature a different fabric in every strip of a block, and require hundreds of prints, this scrappy "Kailua Cabin" quilt depends on orderly repetition of fabrics within each block. This trick to the organized mess of the scrap quilt is made simple by fabric selection in groups of 4 fat quarters. Additionally, the correct fabric arrangement for cutting simplifies the whole process, again. The 4 blocks from the class are the perfect start for a larger quilt, or can be finished as a small wall hanging or 4 pillows. We have also updated the classic scrappy log cabin to use tropical prints and bright colors!

2 For 1 Hula Lessons

Stacy might do a hula dancing . . . Stacy will entertain and educate you with stories from her many trips to Japan and Hawaii. You will learn to carefully cut a Hawaiian-style quilt design, and get 2 blocks from 1 “cutting”! Your fabric (called “Hula-Hoop”) radiates color, and from this you’ll cut your design. Learn some great machine appliqué methods as you complete the sewing and assembly of this gorgeous project in almost no time at all. If you’re quick enough, there might be hula lessons after all! Bring SHARP SMALL scissors for cutting the appliqué.

Honolulu Honey Moons

There are several kits available with varied skill levels. Some will be great beginner projects, and some more advanced. I like to think of this class format as the old fashioned “One Room School House”. More advanced students get a chance to review some of the basic techniques, and will still learn a couple of tricks, and beginners will be inspired, not intimidated, by projects on a larger and more complicated scale. We have all day to create these fun wedding theme projects.

This is a 2 - 4 day class that starts with a 2 for 1 Hula Lessons project, so the technique can be covered on a smaller scale. Next, wall hanging size or bed size projects, the size is up to the student choice, and time frame of class. (2 days or 4 days). Students will learn a lot about machine appliqué, cutting of a Hawaiian style quilt with a fusible product, what designs work well for which technique, how to scale a design, and much more! Stacy will have several “step by step” demonstrations and examples of “works in progress” that help demonstrate the whole concept of Machine Hawaiian Appliqué. Class kits minimun is the 2 for 1 kit, studetns can bring their own fabric or purchase Shades Textiles as they wish. Shades Soft Fuse is recommended for large projects because it is 37 inches wide, and other fusible brands are not so wide..

Color Cups

Stacy started dying fabric in 1986, and has seen her pieces featured in numerous award-winning quilts over the years. After 20 years as a textile artist, she developed a neat way to teach this messy technique in a convention center venue! Explore basic principles behind the chemistry of fabric dyes to begin; then don rubber gloves and your dye-stainable apron as you get down to it: dyeing rainbows, gradations or color blends.  Whether you already have a stash or have simply appreciated the subtleties of hand-dyed fabrics, you’ll enjoy learning and creating with Stacy. Wear comfortable dye-stainable clothes or bring an apron. All dyes, containers, dye-ready

Sunny Day Umbrellas

This is a great project for Shades Textiles hand dyed rainbow packs. The fabric packs have 8 colors, and kaleidoscope blocks have 8 large triangles! In our sample quilt, we used some lovely "Sunny Day" sky fabric for borders. We were inspired by an antique quilt, that had circles in the center of the kaleidoscope blocks. Often antique quilts used this trick to cover up centers that were not perfect. Today, we have the Kalido Ruler! This tool helps us percfectly cut out triangles for the blocks.

This quilt is featured on Page 20 of Kalidscope ABC's by Marti Michell. Both the book and ruler are used in class. Pre-purchase of book, ruler or fabric is not necessary, we always have hand outs and tools for use in class, and for purchase after you fall in love with them! Your welcome to bring your own fabric, or buy the rainbow packs from Shades Textiles hand dyed by Stacy Michell.

Rainbow Swirl

This striking, colorful quilt is a great introduction to patchwork. Look closely and you will see that it made from 2 repeating blocks set in a checkerboard arrangement! In this class you will learn how to cut patchwork shapes from strips of cloth using both the rotary cutter and acrylic templates. The striking coloration comes from the hand dyed fabrics used for this project. All class fabric is pre-washed and ready for use. Kit is available in 3 color combinations.

If you look at this quilt, and think it is difficult, you should take this class before you can take the Vivid Dahlia class.

Not So Giant Vivid Dahlia

Everything has a trick, and this quilt is much easier than it looks! The colorful combination is created from Shades Hand Dyed Textiles, and the pieces are cut from acrylic templates From Marti Michell. This class makes a “Not So Giant Dahlia” that is a 36 inch circle. You will learn everything you need to know to make a Giant Dahlia with a 52 inch circle! We have found that Dahlia quilts are like potato chips, you can not make just one! Once you understand how easy it is, you will want to make a dozen!

It is suggested that you take the Rainbow Swirl class first, but if you have strong patchwork skills and/or you are familiar with Perfect Patchwork Templates by Marti Michell it is not necessary. Skill level is intermediate.
